About the project

Deus Sex Machina is an ongoing art project, started in August 2011, about the metastatic effect of power throughout human history. My hypothesis is that behind the need to hold and preserve power lays mainly the deviant sexual behavior.
I call deviant sexual behavior any manifestation of an individual who is to satisfy his sexual needs at any cost, without regard to the will and consent of the other individuals involved. Moreover, in the case of sexual deviants, rape, both physical and mental, is the most desirable and effective way to obtain pleasure.

In this series of ink drawings, which ultimately will result in a frieze of 27 canvases, I will try to illustrate this theory of metastatic power through graphical interpretation of both historical and imagined facts, and also by bringing the subject to date.

The scenes flow chronologically, starting with the primitive man, go through the events of European history (those that I consider relevant to my thesis), to finally reach the globalized present.
My goal is to visually illustrate the transformation of a species that in its beginning flourished in communities, sharing goods and emotions,
living in harmony with nature and its own conscience, into a disunited species composed of alienated individuals that feed on the needs induced by the few who have the power.
My assumption is that the human species has not evolved over time, but instead undergone a process of degeneration, which replaced the correct natural selection with artificial selection based on induced criteria, solidarity with selfishness, empathy with envy, self-knowledge with mimetic herding behavior.

This process of degeneration started in the Primitive Era when, taking advantage of the fact that the alpha male was busy with procreation and hunting, the whipper-in (set to lure the prey) realized that he must not truly be an alpha male for others to perceive him as, but must only use his cunning ways to manipulate them into believing he is one.
Once he realized his slyness is a weapon as powerful as the alpha male’s stone club, the whipper-in started his ascent through the ranks of the community, lying, tricking, manipulating, luring and raping the alpha male’s woman, thus slowly gaining his role as leader of the tribe and holder of power.
In time, the whipper-in’s offspring, born of rape and incest, refined their inherited cunning ways and perversity, acquiring through manipulation the status of God's anointed people, purifiers of sins, liberators of slaves, builders of empires, fathers of democracy, examples of sacrifices in times of crisis, fighters in the name of world peace.
Only once they’ve perfected their ability to preserve and even enhance their power, exploit weaknesses, disguise themselves and infiltrate the winning side, taking by force what does not belong to them, the whipper-in’s offspring became bored. And at that moment their minds dug up that atavistic memory of the primary rape that gave them so much pleasure.
Greatly tempted by that ecstatic feeling, they decided to relive it all cost and began to use their power to get it. So they surrendered to their deviant desires and, sheltered by their power, began plotting more and more outrageous sexual scenarios.
They lost sight of their natural purpose as members of the species, destroyed all boundaries, including the one that could tell them if their sexual behavior is a result of their brain activity or whether the brain itself has become a result of their deviant sexuality born out of the need to preserve the power.
Can we, the others, the many and obedient, do something? Is there any way to stop the power holders to turn the human history into the most atrocious snuff movie? Maybe not. However, there is a first step that each of us could take: acknowledging that we have become the most lethal virus on our planet, the greatest and most grotesque danger to our own species.
